Veteran Canto-pop lyric writer and columnist Lam Chun-keung has died of blood cancer. He was 56.

Lam, the brother of socialite and romance novelist Eunice Lam Yin-nei, passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Sunday night.

After receiving an education in the United States, Lam became an advertising copywriter before turning to writing song lyrics.

He rose to fame in the 80s when he became one of the most productive writers in the industry. He wrote lyrics for most of the era's top Canto-pop stars, including Alan Tam Wing-lung, Anita Mui Yim-fong, and the late Roman Tam Pak-sin and Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing.

Although the rewards for lyricists pale in comparison to those received by the singers, Mr Lam remained one of the most-wanted writers for the new generation of Canto-pop stars such as Eason Chan Yick-shun during the 1990s.

He also won numerous awards for his compositions during a career which extended well into the late 90s.
