China Postal Air goes global

Annette Chiu

Mainland authorities have given approval to operate international express services for the first time.

The all-cargo carrier, 49 per cent-owned by Hong Kong-listed China Southern Airlines, will fly a Boeing 737-QC aircraft between Shanghai and Osaka.

'It will be the first time for the carrier to operate an international express service,' China Southern company secretary Su Liang said.

But he did not disclose the flight's frequency or say when the service would be launched. 'I don't have the details of the new service. I guess the management [at China Postal] has yet to come up with the timetable,' he said.

China Postal, which operates in 304 cities in 26 provinces on the mainland, would further explore the international market after taking delivery of three other 737 aircraft next year, Mr Su said.

The company has yet to decide where its next international stop will be.

China Southern operates 747 freighters to Belgium and Los Angeles, but express cargo accounts for just 8 per cent of total freight volume.
