Duo banking on Galant for Rally Australia
HONG Kong driver Walther Nahr and co-driver Fred Conner will campaign in a Mitsubishi Galant VR4 in the 1,900-kilometre Telecom Rally Australia, in Western Australia from Saturday until September 21.
Rally Australia has 34 special stages and three so-called ''super special stages''. It is a highlight of the international rally calendar and one of only two rallies which count in both the FIA World Rally Championship and the FIA Asian Pacific Championship.
This will be the fifth year Nahr and Conner have taken on the world's top seeded rally drivers, including 1992 world rally champion Carlos Sainz, and Juha Kankkunen, Ari Vatanen and Didier Auriol, at the Perth-based event.
The team, sponsored this year by Tag Heuer, achieved its best results in 1991 when it finished ahead of a number of leading factory entries to place 21st overall and sixth in Group N.
Tag Heuer sponsored Nahr's BMW M3 entry in the 555 Hong Kong-Beijing Rally in 1987.
The team's Mitsubishi has been prepared to Group N specifications by leading Australian rally professional Rod Jones and will be supported by the Bridgestone Corporation.
