Seatbelt responsibility

I refer to a letter headlined 'Children's seatbelts' (November 29). I would like to point out that, although we do not prosecute children for seatbelt-related offences, the police do take enforcement action against drivers who have the responsibility to make sure that seatbelts used by themselves and other passengers are securely fastened whilst driving.

In the first 10 months of this year, 4,107 fixed-penalty tickets were issued to drivers who failed to ensure their passengers were wearing seatbelts. While the police are determined to maintain road safety in Hong Kong, I am sure your reader would agree that it is, in fact, in everybody's interest for drivers and passengers to do their own part to protect themselves whilst travelling on a vehicle.
