Isabel's Daughter

Isabel's Daughter

by Judi Hendricks

Orion $98

Californian Judi Hendricks' second novel is a tale of an abandoned child's search for her mother and her struggle to find her own identity. The child, Avery, has virtually no clues other than an embroidered T-shirt she was wearing when she was found as a baby. But she has the gift of second sight, which guides her on her quest. The search leads her to Santa Fe, where she goes to work for wealthy art collectors. One of the best things about this book is the descriptions of food. In a cafe on her way to Santa Fe, Avery enjoys 'blue corn enchiladas with chile colorado and a capping of melted jack cheese that looked like snow on Mt Blanca. Puffy chiles rellenos with tomato sauce. Refried beans sprinkled with queso fresco and snips of coriander leaf, dark red arroz con tomate.'
