Drug addict dies in jail after calling for help
A drug addict, 54, detained at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre died yesterday after complaining of being unwell. The man, who had a 40-year history of drug abuse, according to the Corrections Services Department, had been undergoing tuberculosis treatment and had been kept in an isolation cell since September 5. He called medical staff for help at 9am and was certified dead at Caritas Medical Centre an hour later. An inquest will be held.
Couple injured in row over another woman
A couple in Tai Po was hurt during a fight when the wife found out her husband had taken a woman home with him. Both needed hospital treatment for their injuries. The wife, 35, was said to have attacked her husband, 47, with a pair of scissors when she returned home. It was not clear if the other woman was still in the house during the fight.
New label to identify efficient electronics
A new energy-efficiency scheme has been introduced to allow makers or agents of televisions and LCD monitors to label their products as energy-saving. The voluntary scheme is an extension of an existing programme under the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department that covers most household appliances and office equipment.
120 evacuated during blaze in restaurant
About 120 residents in Mei Foo Sun Chuen were evacuated when a fire broke out at a restaurant on the ground floor of their housing block. The blaze started about midnight and four residents were hospitalised for smoke inhalation. The fire was put out in about half an hour. The cause is still being investigated.
$43M mark six jackpot
The first prize in the Mark Six Christmas Snowball today will be about $43 million and could be the fifth largest first prize record if only one person takes it home.
