Where? In South Yarra, a ritzy residential area in Melbourne, close to the boutiques and restaurants on Toorak Road, and 10 minutes from the business district.
Who goes there? Olivia Newton-John is a fan, as are Australian fashion designer Collette Dinnigan and Aussie Vogue editor Kirstie Clements.
So, what's the big deal? After a stylish makeover by owners Peter and Rowina Thomas, this all-suite boutique has fast become the city's lushest lifestyle address, where the little things count.
Such as? The rooms have underfloor heating, after-dark floor lights in the bathrooms, steam-free mirrors, a safe for your laptop, and wide-screen TV. Non-gizmo goodies include a pillow menu, gourmet minibar, bicycles, fat towels and, miracle of miracles, windows that open.
The suites sound like mini-apartments. They include open-plan studios and two-bedroom 'speciality' styles, but you might want to save up your pennies for the Platinum suite, which has a spa bath, B&O sound system, personalised writing paper, private kitchen and freezer filled with home-made ice cream.
Comfy or cutting-edge? The look is modern oriental, which means a glossy combo of strict lines and neutral colours warmed by swathes of spice. The guest rooms feature original artworks and handmade furniture, plus there is a mini art gallery on each floor.
Sounds cerebral. Luckily, there's loads of shallow stuff, too, such as mani-pedis at Retreat, the hotel spa.
Is there a restaurant? Bistro Lyall offers contemporary cuisine that reflects Melbourne's multicultural influences, while the Champagne Bar serves French fizz and nibbles, including Peking duck cones with plum sauce.
Anything else we should know? Those who have to work, can be whisked to the office by courtesy limousine. And at the end of the day, guests will find their favourite drink waiting for them in their suite.
