A Thing Or Two About Curtis And Camilla

A Thing Or Two About Curtis And Camilla

by Nick Fowler

Flame $98

Nick Fowler is a semi- professional musician who has written for Metal Edge and Teen Beat magazines. His real claim to fame is a bit part in The Sopranos. Fowler's first novel is about an unsuccessful thirty-something New York guitarist named Curtis, who falls in love with an outrageously beautiful blue-eyed black woman, Camilla. She's out of his league and soon dumps him, leaving him to spend the rest of the book wallowing in self-pity. Fowler bravely lays bare male emotions, but it's more pretentious than honest. He throws around pop culture references, and uses trendy gimmicks such as footnotes, song lyrics and photos, but it never really works. Even Publisher's Weekly called it 'gooey', 'insipid', 'cloying' and 'half-baked'.
