Woman injured by falling furniture
An elderly woman was injured by fragments of a chair that shattered after it was thrown out of a residential block in Kowloon City yesterday.
The 64-year-old woman suffered head injuries when the wooden chair fell from the Cheung Tung House of the Tung Tau Estate at 10am.
She was leaving the 25-storey building when the chair - which witnesses said was about 60cm tall - landed about a metre in front of her. Wood fragments hit her in the back of the head as she turned away.
The woman was later treated and discharged from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after she complained about feeling nauseous.
Residents alerted police, who conducted a search. Witnesses said the chair was thrown out of an opening directly over the exit.
Within hours of the incident, about mid-day, three bags of rubbish - including a rolled-up carpet - were thrown out of the same building. No one was injured in the second incident.
Residents living near the block said objects were frequently thrown from the building.
They said all sorts of rubbish - sometimes even human excrement - was thrown out of the building three or four times a week.
The police are investigating the incidents. Two teams of officers from the Wong Tai Sin's divisional investigation team have been assigned to handle the cases.
A hygiene points system for public estates was launched in August. Under the system throwing objects out of windows will result in a maximum seven-point deduction.
