Outstanding Irish rider Michael Kinane will make his annual excursion to Hong Kong next month after being granted a licence yesterday. The Licensing Committee has licensed Kinane from February 15 to March 21 inclusive, taking in many of the major events including the Derby.

Late last year, Kinane was replaced by Jamie Spencer as the first rider for Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O'Brien. However, he quickly picked up another topline retainer with Irish trainer John Oxx and will undoubtedly be required there in March.

Kinane has had 16 previous contracts in Hong Kong for varying lengths of time, riding 159 winners in all including two Hong Kong Derbys, the Hong Kong Cup, the Vase, two Hong Kong Bowls, the Gold Cup and the QE II Cup.Alan Aitken
