A contest to get creative minds racing

To take part in the average race, all you need is physical strength and a strong mind. However, to compete in the Lomo Race, creativity and a special kind of camera are required.

The competition, to be held in Hong Kong for the first time in Central's Soho area tomorrow, has been organised by the Lomographic Asia Society, a photography group for people who use 'lomo' cameras.

Lomos are different from ordinary cameras because they do not have automatic focus. The pictures they produce are very bright, and often blurry.

The competition will comprise teams of three or four people working together.

'We believe that through lomography, strangers will become closer. We want lomographers to make friends during this one-day-event,' said organiser and lomographer Martin Cheung, adding that any individual participants would be assigned to a group on the day. Each team will be given the gadgets they need to take part in the race and asked to take up to 60 photos in three hours to fill up a poster provided by the organiser.

Lomo cameras will be available on loan to anyone who does not have their own.

The race will start at 2pm outside the society's office in Central and end at 5pm, when all films will be collected. During that time, teams must complete four games in different spots around Central and will be allowed to take pictures wherever they wish.

Team members who complete their poster will be given prizes, including a limited edition T-shirt. All posters will go on show later in the evening at a party, to be held at Area Bar/Club in Central at 9pm, when a winning entry will be chosen.

The winning team will receive a prize of lomographic products.

To take part in the event or the party, participants need to register online.
