M on the Bund in the pink after five years of feasting

They came as pink panthers, pink punks and pink vamps - even in pink pyjamas - to M on the Bund's fifth birthday party last night.

More than 1,000 people, including 200 from overseas and 150 from Hong Kong, made sure the landmark Shanghai restaurant - sister to Hong Kong's M at the Fringe - rocked.

The theme was pink, and 'just socks won't cut the mustard' warned the pink invitation, otherwise 'door bitches Bruno and Siren won't let you in'.

Guests had flown in from Vancouver, San Francisco, London, Sydney, Tokyo, Thailand, Seoul and Hong Kong for one of Asia's biggest parties of the year.

'It's nothing short of a miracle that we are still here and still gorgeous, still glamorous, and so is this city - and getting more so all the time,' gushed fuchsia-clad hostess Michelle Garnaut.

She said that five years ago it seemed like a 'total impossibility that we would have a really great restaurant here and that it would go from strength to strength'.

'But we are all sinking pink and having fun,' she said.

Ms Garnaut, who also runs M at the Fringe, explained she had not invited celebrities to the party.

'It's an assortment of friends and customers all having a good time, it is not about famous names,' she said.

Among the early arrivals were Hong Kong lawyer and wine guru Vincent Cheung Ting-kau, David and Canary Wong, style icon Sin Sin, Asia Pacific Vision boss Mark Erder and his wife, marketing expert Bella.
