Beauty consultants stage a protest in Central yesterday against plans to regulate the use of medical devices.
The protesters say the regulations, which would categorise devices ranging from bandages to pacemakers according to risk, are too strict and could put half of Hong Kong's estimated 100,000 beauty consultants out of work.
Lasers and intensive pulse light devices would be restricted to medical or dental practitioners, and the personnel under their supervision. The protestors argued that many of them were far more experienced than doctors in using the devices for beauty treatments. The Legislative Council's health services panel is due to discuss the proposal today.
