Once upon a time gyms were aesthetically bland and purely functional; these days they are as designer sleek as some of the bodies that frequent them. The new Pure Fitness gym in the Kinwick Centre in Central (on the site of the former New York Fitness) is a case in point. Designed by Natasha Usher of Nude (tel: 2501 5911), the 17,000-square-foot workout haven was custom-made to strict specifications. While its sister establishments, Pure Yoga, are fittingly decked out in calming blue, Fitness is themed energy-oriented red, of which there are subtle accents throughout. This is complemented by walnut wood on walls and lockers - even the grain had to be perfectly straight before it made the grade - and sprung, non-slip, pine-laminate floors. Floating ceilings were installed in the lobby, juice bar, main gym and spa to improve the acoustics, and great pains were taken to avoid a warehouse feel. 'We had to think creatively to stop it looking cheap,' says Usher. Attention to detail has been observed throughout: strip lighting in the women's vanity area ensures make-up perfection after class, while hand-held showers are useful if you want to avoid getting your hair wet. Even the chrome drinking fountains are a design delight. It's enough to make you splurge on new gym clothes just to fit in with your surroundings. For membership details call Pure Fitness
