Losses double at Australian unit

Ben Kwok

Losses at Hutchison Whampoa's Australian mobile-phone unit more than doubled to A$409.84 million (HK$2.53 billion) last year, despite the firm adding nearly 70,000 customers to its third-generation (3G) subscriber base in the second half.

Hutchison Telecommunications Australia, 58 per cent owned by Hutchison Whampoa, widened its loss by 116 per cent to A$280 million in the second half, compared with $129.44 million in the first half. Almost 75 per cent of the loss was brought about by the roll-out of its 3 service, which recorded a loss before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $306 million last year.
