Not just personality

I was most interested in the feature article headlined 'Personality portraits' (February 9).

I would like to clarify that it is very rare and possibly unethical for someone to be offered a job based solely on personality type. Other aspects such as education level, training and experience far outweigh a suitable 'personality' for recruitment.

Let us also not forget that Hong Kong is a very multi-cultural employment environment. In such circumstances many people with personality types that at first seem to be unsuitable for a job actually do very well because of the added need to be understanding and accepting of different cultures.

I found the Enneagram test excellent for pointing me in the right direction for a career and the next job. But for overall personal understanding I have found the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test to be more helpful.

The Myers-Briggs test also helped me to work on removing areas of conflict, form strategies for enhancing communication and develop a range of other leadership styles for different situations, and allowed me to understand my own personality types, which meant I could become aware of them in others.

One of the more unusual applications that I was interested to discover was how my Myers-Briggs test helped me understand my parenting style. I was thrilled that this test was able to show me my strengths and give tips for me to overcome my struggles in something as complex as being a mother.
