Experiments in sound a success

Andy Chen

Following the success of their album Magic & Medicine last year, The Coral have gone all experimental with their latest offering, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker.

The 28-minute eleven-track mini-album is full of new sounds and surprises, borrowing ideas from different eras of music.

Precious Eyes is impressive opener for the album. In Migraine, the group goes back to basics with a classic 1980s-style rock song. The album even contains a track reminiscent of 1950s or 60s sounds, Lovers Paradise.

Other outstanding tracks include Sorrow or the Song and Grey Harpoon.

The songs remain guitar-driven but slower and more soulful. Clearly The Coral is undergoing a transformation and seeking a new sound.

The band members seem to have made an album for themselves rather than catering to their fans, but be patient and give it a good listen. Although not as catchy and rhythmic as their past work, it is a refreshing change.
