Radio coverage questioned

Klaudia Lee

A central government official yesterday questioned RTHK's and Commercial Radio's coverage of the political reform debate.

Zou Zhekai, deputy director of Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong, made the remarks when asked whether the central government had made too many comments on the city's constitutional development.

Mr Zou replied: 'When you turn on RTHK and Commercial Radio what do you hear?' Asked whether the broadcasters' reports were 'bad-mouthing' Hong Kong, he said Hong Kong citizens could decide for themselves whether they were hearing more from the central government or from 'other voices'.

RTHK said no matter whether important events happened on the mainland or in Hong Kong, the station would report on them in a 'fair and impartial' manner.

Commercial Radio said it had a duty to hold open discussions with Hong Kong people on issues of concern to them.
