Bristling with security, the private visit of Shimon Peres to Hong Kong last week came under the guise of science and technology.

Members of the Hong Kong Police VIP protection unit and Mossad-trained bodyguards featured prominently as Mr Peres explored the idea of strengthening co-operation between Israel and Hong Kong in these fields.

The grandfather-of-six, who cites French President Jacques Chirac, former US president Bill Clinton and US Secretary of State Colin Powell as his close friends, was one of the founders of Kibbutz Alumot in the Jordan Valley and rates his 10 years as a farmer as a 'romantic' period in his life, before he was thrust into politics by the necessities of war.
