battleship's nefarious mission

American imperialists are again interfering with Hong Kong's internal affairs and challenging the dignity of the motherland!

No, I don't mean Democrat Martin Lee Chu-ming's little sideshow in the US Senate. This one goes all the way to the Pentagon.

Following a Woodward-and-Bernstein-style investigation - actually I read about it in a Chinese paper the other day, but what do my gweilo editors know - LoDown can now exclusively reveal the following.

While 'drunken' sailors from the USS Kitty Hawk were sent to Wan Chai and Lan Kwai Fong to distract law-enforcement officers, the battleship group - which left Hong Kong on Wednesday after accomplishing its nefarious mission - was secretly interfering with the radio communications of Hong Kong police.

Officers on Lantau were particularly hard-hit, becoming virtually mute and deaf to one another's operations. The police's public relations bureau has reluctantly admitted this to LoDown.

'There was some radio interference on Lantau,' a police spokeswoman said. But she put on a brave face, insisting no operations were compromised.

The American consulate refused to comment. Lower Albert Road and the Foreign Ministry office also tried to keep the lid on a potentially embarrassing diplomatic incident.

But my own secret source told me otherwise. 'Err, there is a lot of radio equipment abroad Kitty Hawk, and it was anchored off Tsing Yi, you know,' said Deep Throat while rolling his eyes.

The full extent of this American conspiracy remains unknown, but LoDown with his depth of journalistic experience and courage will continue this investigation - and read the papers.

Watch this space.
