Test of time

For Finland, 2000 wasn't just about the new millennium. Then, the Scandinavian country celebrated 125 years of Finnish design and marked the founding of the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design, which set the ball rolling in 1875. An exhibition of the society's work, Finnish Design 125, on a world tour since 2001, has finally reached Hong Kong. It features a selection of furniture, tableware, lamps, glass and textiles, the exhibits having been chosen by a group of well-known, contemporary Finnish designers as the embodiment of Finnish design with reference to innovation, function, aesthetic value and durability. Rather than the latest achievements, useful homeware classics that have stood the test of time were chosen, such as Fiskars scissors, Antti Nurmesniemi's enamel coffee pot and chair (pictured) and Marimekko fabrics. Presented by Design Forum Finland in partnership with the Consulate General of Finland, Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), Nokia, Finnair, the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design, the exhibition is open until next Sunday from 10am to 6pm at the HKDC, 28 Kennedy Road, Central. Admission is free.
