Indie infatuation

don't think much of Chinese indie music or female-fronted bands? This album will probably change your view. Indie Queen is a compilation of 16 tracks performed by eight female-led acts from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.

The artists' pure voices backed by relaxing musical arrangements make for a pleasant Saturday afternoon's listening.

Even though some of the songs use heavier electric guitars, the overall album sounds light. Each song, nevertheless, has its own personality, just like the versatile girls.

The album kicks off with two songs by Taiwanese singer-songwriter Cheer Chen. Coffee Shop of Jioufen and Tail of Rainy Days are tranquil acoustic tunes. Chen is followed by Hopscotch, the exciting mainland band who released the acclaimed album, A Wishful Way, last year. Animal Fazenda and A Wishful Way are the featured highlights from that album.

Taiwan's Natural Curve bring an electronic note to the album. Only in a Dream begins with light electro beats which interweave effortlessly with singer Wah Wah's vocals.

Local duo, at17, make a mark with Singing and their mellow hit, You Have Your Own Style, both co-written by the young, talented singer-songwriter Lam Yat-fung. Day, a lyrical piece performed by goodmorningloria, ends this appealing compilation on a high note.
