Tai Po councillor arrested over attack

Tai Po District Council vice-chairman Wan Hok-lim was arrested and led away in handcuffs yesterday in connection with an incident where his daughter, his nephew and another man were splashed with acid.

Officers from the Tai Po district crime squad raided Mr Wan's home at 7am yesterday.

He was hooded and handcuffed before being escorted to his property agency in Wan Tau Street, Tai Po, which officers searched.Mr Wan, 57, has been a Tai Po district councillor since 2000 and a district fight-crime committee member since 1999.

Last night, he was still being held for questioning in Tai Po police station.

In 1998, Mr Wan was awarded the Medal of Honour for his outstanding and dedicated community service in the district.

He is also a Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference delegate of Guangdong province and chairman of the New Territories Commercial and Industrial General Association.

Mr Wan was the third man to be arrested in connection with the wounding case, which happened in Tai Po on January 16, police said.

After the attack, officers arrested the first suspect, 27, on February 25 and a second man, 32, on March 1. The two men appeared in Fanling Court after being charged with throwing corrosive fluid with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They will appear in court next month.

On January 16, Mr Wan's daughter, 39, and his nephew, 32, were attacked after they left the property agency office where they worked.

Police said the two victims were struck with corrosive acid when they were about to get into a car in Heung Sze Mui Street.

A male passer-by also suffered minor injuries.

His nephew suffered serious injuries to his face and eyes and is still undergoing treatment.

His daughter suffered burns to her neck and limbs but was not seriously injured.
