Flouting the Basic Law

I am offended by the blatant disregard for provisions made for universal suffrage in the Basic Law in the letter 'Martin Lee should make public apology' (March 16), by Hong Kong members of the CPPCC.

Article 45 clearly states that the ultimate aim is the selection of the chief executive by universal suffrage. Article 68 clearly states that the ultimate aim is the election of all Legco members by universal suffrage. Annex I, Clause 7 defines how to change the method for selecting chief executives for the terms subsequent to 2007. Section III of Annex II defines the same for Legco.

The Basic Law indeed allows the election of the chief executive in 2007, and of Legco in 2008.

Martin Lee Chu-ming spoke the truth with courage. He does not need to apologise.
