Striking a balance

Whether the Action Group on Protection of Victoria Harbour ultimately wins or loses, the government is to pay the contractor compensation of $100 million for the suspension of the project, or much higher damages if it eventually calls off the project.

Isn't there a better use for this government money?

Has the group noticed that the water quality has improved amid reclamation works in the harbour - corals are returning for the first time in over a decade? Do its members ever hike in the beautiful country parks which make up two-thirds of Hong Kong?

We should be proud of keeping pace in the extremely competitive international economy and striking a balance to protect the environment the best we can.

May I suggest that $100 million would comfortably support over 1,000 families of four on welfare for a year. Don't use the banner 'Hong Kong public' at the expense of the less fortunate in the community.
