Streakers could get jail terms

Streakers face the threat of a $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail if they run onto the pitch at the Hong Kong Stadium during this weekend's Sevens, police said yesterday.

The warning was issued by Happy Valley's divisional commander, Chief Inspector Francis Mak Chui-tong, who said offenders exposing themselves in the stands would face the same sanctions as streakers.

He also warned that women who exposed themselves would receive the same treatment as men. 'We will not tolerate this and they will be arrested and prosecuted,' he said.

Last year two male fans were prosecuted for indecent exposure at the Sevens, which is renowned for its sometimes over-exuberant behaviour.

Meanwhile, police have urged fans to use public transport to get to the stadium as special traffic-control measures will be in force. From 8am today and 7.30am tomorrow, traffic will be one-way down Caroline Hill Road and Eastern Hospital Road. Both roads will be closed to traffic at 6pm on both days to allow crowds to disperse.
