A short course is non-award bearing and suitable for people seeking specific skills and self-enrichment rather than qualifications. Many people take short courses to gain an understanding of the discipline before they pursue a formal qualification in it. At some local tertiary institutions, short courses are designed on a modular basis and grouped into various streams under the certificate programme. Students can obtain a certificate by taking a number of short courses. Hundreds of short courses are available two to three times a year at each local tertiary institution. Entry for short courses tends to be open. Duration varies, depending on the course, ranging from a half day to fewer than 100 hours.
