Diaoyus and the Falklands parallel

Correspondent Thomas Choy, in his letter headlined 'Diaoyus: send a warship' (March 27), seems to make a confusion when he advocates the despatching of Chinese warships to the disputed island chain.

He claims that the handling of the Falklands issue (Malvinas for the Argentinians) by former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher was correct, and that China should follow it.

But the fact is that from a legal standpoint, by sending warships to the Diaoyu Islands China will be acting like Argentina, and Japan will be in the position of Britain, not the other way around.

You cannot solve international disputes by twisting your opponent's arm - only by peaceful negotiations. The world is full of similar barren rocks with several nations contending for ownership. If they conduct those disputes in the same fashion as Chinese demonstrators are handling this one (i.e. in Argentina's style), for sure we are heading for World War III.
