Protests: share the blame

Protesters have sparked an outcry that police should not use violence against them. More astonishingly, some have invoked the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

I appreciate that they are defending the freedom to protest and the right to personal safety, but have they considered the position of police? Their protest last week blocked the entrance to the Central Government Offices, and they resorted to violence.

Police first counselled the demonstrators politely - and were ignored. Even reporters and police grappled.

Both sides should share the responsibility for the fracas and avoid another mess. Further accusations will only make matters worse.
