One of the more surprising movies at the Hong Kong International Film Festival today is Capturing the Friedmans - a documentary about the collapse of an American family, torn apart by accusations of child sexual abuse.
The film started out as a story about birthday party clowns, but when filmmaker Andrew Jarecki discovered that his subject David Friedman, aka Silly Billy, aka David Kaye, was a member of a family engulfed in a high-profile 1980s paedophilia scandal, the film took a radically different direction. He draws on the Friedman family's home videos to produce a compelling tale of a family's destruction.
David Friedman's brother and father eventually pleaded guilty to charges.
Friedman was in Hong Kong last year teaching the tricks of his trade to fellow magicians at the Eddy International Magic Convention.
Catch the Friedmans today at Cine Art House at 5pm.
