Blind Flight (An Evil Cradling)

by Brian Keenan

Vintage $112

Originally published in 1992 under the title An Evil Cradling, this re-release is timed to coincide with the film version of Brian Keenan's account of his and John McCarthy's kidnapping in Lebanon in the 1980s. Keenan, a teacher at the American University in Beirut, was abducted by the Hezbollah militia in 1985, and held for five years in the terrifying squalor of their secret prisons. In spite of the harrowing subject matter, Keenan doesn't dwell on the horrors he suffered. His writing is elegant and direct, and his description of the friendship that sprang up between him and McCarthy is touching and often funny. This is also a fascinating close-up look at the nature of terrorists. Mostly in their early 20s, they were both brutal and child-like, with almost no knowledge of the world beyond their own experiences of poverty and oppression.
