Chan's solo run beats the weather

LOCAL athletes last night sloshed their way around the running track at Wanchai sports ground in an attempt to impress Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association (HKAAA) selectors looking to select national teams for several international meetings later this year.

But apart from the odd, better-than-average performance, standards were generally well down.

Watson's Athletic Club's Maggie Chan Man-yee, the Hong Kong women's 800 metres and 1500 metres record holder, ran a very impressive solo 1500 metres to clock four minutes 34.47 seconds which was four seconds off her national time.

Chan also won the women's 3000 metres in similar fashion, clocking 10:28.30.

WAC's Singapore Open Championships bronze medallist Simon Parsons breezed home to score a very easy win over top ranked Happy Valley runner Cheung Man-ho in the 5,000 metres, clocking 15:44.82.

Sprinter Neville Ku Wai-ming of WAC, could only manage to clock 10.90 seconds in winning the men's 100 metres.

In field events Watson's top thrower Kevin Baker was one of very few competitors who managed to handle the slippery conditions underfoot in scoring a good double to win both men's javelin and shot putt events with throws of 57.54 metres and 12.85 metres respectively.

Achilles SC's French long jumper Thierry Delrieu won the men's long jump with a leap of 6.89 metres.
