New book aims to spur youngsters to take a positive attitude

Ma Hoi-kwan was born with only three fingers and seven toes, but she rose above her disability to win a gold medal in badminton at an Asian championship last year.

She played by holding the racket with her left thumb and little finger.

'When I was younger I often wondered why I was like this,' Ms Ma said. 'After I got older I realised that everyone is different. If it weren't for my disability I would not have been able to compete in the championship.'

The stories of how Ma and six other disabled Hong Kong athletes achieved success in the international arenas are told in the new book by Olympic diver Yu Yuet.

Yu's book, Breaking out of the Cocoon, was launched yesterday. 'Through their stories, I hope I can send a positive message to primary and secondary school students,' said Yu, who is also a physical education and Putonghua teacher.
