When in Rome
The Centrium, Hong Kong
The ancient Romans knew a thing or two about baths and relaxation. So did the Turks of the Middle Ages, with their famous steam baths. Fortunately for us, we can now enjoy the whole package in one relaxing visit to Daily Spa and feel like a pampered Turkish pasha nibbling grapes in a nourishing vino bath.
The bath, which includes red wine extracts and organic essential oils and is lauded for its outstanding anti-oxidant properties, was the last treatment in a series that left me not only relaxed and restored but with even a changed mindset. It made me realise that relaxation should not be a luxury but a necessity that our bodies require.
The treatment started in a quiet room, where the fragrant air, comfortable chairs, candlelight and rose petals floating in large stone bowls slowed my thoughts even before the Daily Spa massage began.
The bed alone was a great experience: firm and soft at the same time, and heated.
The small hands of Rose, the therapist, were tender but strong, and she often checked whether the pressure was right. Enveloped in the fragrance of the essential oils, I drifted off to sleep.
After the massage, I had a big room all to myself, including a steam bath with essential oils and a large jacuzzi with a sky shower. Grapes, water and grape juice were served. Daily Spa partner Eric Bosma reminded me to drink enough water.
Hearing that advice, I thought it strange that Daily Spa should offer cocktail parties, including martinis and margaritas 'On the Rocks'. But partner Rozaly Ostling says the spa in fact serves only fruit juice concoctions with light refreshment, and discourages alcohol unless it is after the treatment - even then only white wine or champagne is available. 'On the Rocks' refers to hot stone treatment for face and body massages.
I cannot imagine a better way to hold a hens' party than with a Sangria and Fruit special or a Happy Hour at Daily Spa, which also offers group packages. The group treatment is for four to 12 people.
Daily Spa also offers a massage for pregnant women. The massage is recommended for both before and after birth, with many benefits promised for mother and baby.
