Aussies and Canucks set for battle of the balls

Kelvin Chan

It's the battle of the balls this weekend. In one corner, the Australian Association of Hong Kong's annual Summer Ball to be held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday. And in another, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce's annual Canadian Community Ball at the Grand Hyatt on Friday.

Can't decide which one to attend? Cityseen has weighed the odds.

The Canucks' theme this year is the Roaring '20s, while the Aussies' theme is Black Tie with a Touch of Gold, Glitter and Glamour. The Canadians have wrangled up Lorraine Hahn of CNN and Chris Lincoln of TVB to emcee, while the Aussies snagged TVB voiceover guy Simon Broad.

For entertainment, the Aussies have hired the Enormous Horns, a band from Sydney. Meanwhile, the Canucks are flying in singer Elaine Hefferton and pianist Darol Fonteyne.

The Canadians hope to get 500 guests, but only have about 400 at the moment. The Australians have 650 and are aiming for 700.

'We've got to beat them on something,' joked Ian Whitton, Australian Association president.
