Lack of focus mars exhibition

Last week's CEhk exhibition proved to be something of a mixed bag of exhibitors that left some complaining about the lack of focus.

CEhk incorporates the former Computer Expo, which was joined by the Consumer Electronics Expo and the Communications Expo under the CEhk umbrella.

According to organiser CMP Asia, the expanded scope of the show was to exhibit the increasing number of products that now overlap all three sectors with similar functions and features.

However, one enterprise resources planning (ERP) software developer complained that the show's inclusion of peripheral retailers meant that there were a lot of people shopping who would not be interested in his solutions.

The exhibition ran from Thursday to Sunday, with the first two days reserved for trade visitors. However, many of the invitation cards required for entry appeared to have been given to junior staff members.

One exhibitor with CAC management solutions said it received between 30 and 50 serious inquiries a day over the first two days, slightly better than last year's event, when attendance was hit by the Sars outbreak.

The spokesman said the firm had decided to take part in the show largely out of loyalty as the company had exhibited at the expo for eight years.

An executive with CMP said that last year's event had attracted about 30,000 visitors and the organiser expected more this year.

ERP vendors took up several stands at the exhibition. Among them was Eastop Computer Consultants. Paul Lau, a project manager with Eastop, said the firm's software was a one-stop shop for efficient document flow.

Eastop's solution is designed for small and medium-sized enterprises and Mr Lau said it was ideal for companies in Hong Kong with manufacturing operations in the Pearl River Delta.
