Give the gift of a goat

Caryn Yap

Ever wanted to make a charitable donation but been unsure how to best direct your efforts? Should you give away your old clothes, some food maybe, or just plain old cash?

Well, now there is another option. A four-legged option.

CitySeen got a letter the other day from the charity Heifer International, detailing how donating one animal - a cow, goat, or even a yak - can make all the difference to a poor mainland family by giving them milk to drink and sell, manure to fertilise crops and food to eat.

Li Jinghua of Sichuan was one such lucky beneficiary.

'We couldn't sleep the night before,' Mr Li said. 'Early that morning, we ran up the hill to watch the road. Finally we saw a white goat. We ran down the hill screaming, 'The goat is coming, the goat is coming!' That was a moment of great happiness for my family.'

A farm animal is the gift that keeps on giving - all recipients pass on their animal's offspring to help others in need. Call Heifer International at 2368 0227 or check out www.heiferhk.org.
