Insurance secured for June 4 protest
Organisers of Sunday's events to mark the 15th anniversary of the June 4 Tiananmen crackdown yesterday secured insurance cover.
Lee Cheuk-yan, vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, said Asia Insurance, the family company of Bernard Charnwut Chan who represents the sector in the legislature, reached a preliminary agreement on coverage.
A march is being held from Victoria Park to government headquarters in Central. But Mr Lee said: 'The company only agreed to provide insurance cover for activities inside the park that day while what happens outside will not be covered.' He said a formal insurance policy had still to be issued.
Mr Chan could not be reached for comment yesterday.
On Tuesday, his company offered to provide insurance cover for the June 4 candlelight vigil in Victoria Park after the alliance said it could not secure cover for the event.
The alliance said no insurance company would provide cover because of the vigil's sensitivity, given the current political climate.
Speaking after meeting Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho Chi-ping yesterday, alliance chairman Szeto Wah quoted Mr Ho as saying that the march could still go ahead even if they failed to secure insurance cover.
