Zhao Ziyang

Then: Party general secretary, but put under house arrest before the crackdown for supporting the student movement. He was later purged from the party.

Now: Still under house arrest in Beijing.

Wen Jiabao

Then: director of the General Office of the party central committee and secretary of the Work Committee of Departments under the party central committee.

Now: premier

Deng Xiaoping

Then: chairman of the Central Military Commission

Now: died of respiratory failure on February 19, 1997, at the age of 92.

Li Peng

Then: as premier, he declared martial law in parts of Beijing

Now: in retirement. His term as premier ended in 1998 but he remained as National People's Congress chairman until March last year.

Jiang Zemin

Then: as Shanghai's mayor and party secretary, he closed the reformist paper World Economic Herald in May and put the situation inShanghai under control

Now: chairman of the Central Military Commission. Retired as president in march 2003.

Hu Jintao

Then: party secretary of Tibet Autonomous Region.
