Preventative steps

Jane Parry

Staying healthy

A balanced diet, regular exercise and sufficient rest are the basis of a strong immune system.

Boost your immunity with supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids, glyco-nutrients, and vitamin and mineral supplements. Ask your doctor for advice.

If you're ill

Don't take antibiotics unless you have a bacterial infection.

Don't pressure your doctor for antibiotics and, if they're offered, check that they're really necessary.

Always take antibiotics at the stated frequency and finish the whole course - even if you feel better.

Never self-prescribe antibiotics. Different infections require different drugs, which must be administered in the correct dosage.

If you're in hospital

Check the area around your bed and don't be afraid to ask for it to be cleaned, if necessary.

Ask the ward nurse what infection-control measures they're using.

Wash your hands frequently.

Avoid close contact with other patients.

Don't walk around the ward without shoes or slippers.
