Some of Hong Kong's most famous brands will be displayed in Shanghai when an annual products expo crosses the border for the first time.

Household names such as HSBC, Lee Kum Kee, Lam Soon, and Emperor International Exchange will be represented at the 2004 Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo from September 2 to 5 at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre.

Another indispensable feature of the expo event, the Miss Exhibition beauty pageant, will also be held.

Jose Yu Sun-say, the president of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association, said yesterday: 'The expo will provide an effective channel for Hong Kong brands to open up the huge market in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta region.'

Legislator Lui Ming-wah, who is chairman of the organising committee, said the business community had responded overwhelmingly.

The products expo is part of a programme to celebrate the manufacturing association's 70th anniversary and will feature more than 400 booths.

Similar to the products expo in Hong Kong, the Shanghai fair will invite visitors to choose a top 10 of Hong Kong brands and Miss Exhibition winners.

Mr Yu expected more than 400,000 people to visit the exhibition.
