Cheng Shousan - the no-longer mysterious late-night caller to Allen Lee Peng-fei - found the perfect chance yesterday to show how common it is for him to call Hong Kong politicians when he got in touch with a pro-Beijing legislator - who just happened to be having lunch with 20 reporters.

When David Chu Yu-lin's pager beeped, the Hong Kong Progressive Alliance lawmaker showed reporters a message asking him to call Mr Cheng.

To everyone's surprise, Mr Chu picked up the phone and made a call. When he finished it, he said Mr Cheng had complained that the press was being too aggressive in calling him. He also said he felt relieved to be vindicated of accusations that he had pressured Mr Lee.

'I told him there were 20 journalists sitting in front of me and also told him the media's memory was very short in Hong Kong,' Mr Chu said.

'And I told him not to ask about my wife.'
