Chinese opera gets new touch

The Taipei Li-yuan Chinese Opera Theatre from Taiwan adds new elements to traditional Chinese performances.

In tomorrow's opera fest, organised by the Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre, the public can enjoy three operas, Ya Kuan Citadel, Blocking the Way of a Horse and Madness Over Losing a Baby Boy.

There will also be a special session to introduce basic characters in Beijing-style opera, in which each actor/actress is trained for a specific role and each role has its own singing and speaking style, movements and costume. The audience will see all the four main roles, namely Sheng (male), Tan (female), Ching (painted face) and Chou (clown).

The troupe describe their style as 'modern traditional'. Call 2523 5555 to reserve seats.
