Hail Mary

Fine alfresco dining is the last thing that springs to mind when deciding where to eat in Tai Kok Tsui. But since Thai Mary opened inside the City Golf Club, near Kowloon Station, crowds have been packing in. The rustic decorations - think lots of wood and brass accessories - and cosy seating make for a relaxing dinner but the action is on the terrace (above), where diners sitting under umbrellas can watch chefs cook fresh seafood and meat on an open grill.

The barbecue, offering snapper, tiger prawns, scallops, chicken and beef, is available at weekends and on public holidays. The seafood is seasoned with fine salt and the meat is grilled on skewers, satay style. We tried the satays ($48 for six), which were juicy and tender, and from the regular menu we ordered a mild coconut curry with beef brisket ($78), stir-fried watercress with balachan ($58), and piping hot, chewy naan bread with yoghurt ($28). For diners who can't make up their minds there is a mixed appetiser (below; $140). The restaurant's icy cold drinks include the fabulous Thai Mary ($38), a blend of strawberry, blueberry and pineapple juice. The Thai lime soda ($38) is a twist on the original - sweetened with honey instead of sugar.

Thai Mary, City Golf Club, 8 Wui Cheung Road, Kowloon. Open: noon-11pm; tel: 2199 7392.
