Councillor, wife deny false filing

A district councillor and his wife pleaded not guilty yesterday to giving false information to an electoral officer. The charges arise from last year's district council elections.

Choi Sai-chuen, 55, a member of Eastern District Council, and his wife, Wong Sau-po, 48, are alleged to have given an electoral officer information they knew to be materially false or misleading.

The information purportedly showed that their only or principal residence was premises at King's Road, North Point.

Government Counsel Marco Li Kwok-wai, prosecuting on behalf of the Independent Commission Against Corruption, said there were nine witnesses - four ICAC officers and five members of the public.

Principal Magistrate Ian Candy adjourned the case to July 15 for a pre-trial review.

Both defendants were granted bail of $5,000 and are required to report to the ICAC every Monday.

The court warned them not to interfere with any of the witnesses.
