Parents sue sellers of bad milk powder
Vendors who sold substandard baby milk powder in Fuyang , Anhui province , are being sued by the parents of a baby who was left malnourished after being fed the formula.
The one-year-old baby - identified by his nickname, Xiaoaoqiang - was one of more than 100 infants in Fuyang confirmed to be malnourished after being fed the powder. At least 12 other children died.
In their civil lawsuit filed in Fuyang Intermediate People's Court, the parents are demanding compensation of about 250,000 yuan from the merchants who sold the milk powder.
The scandal, which emerged in April, triggered a series of reports about unsafe food and food production in the mainland. Newspapers and television stations across the country have carried reports on items from fake soy sauce to dumplings made of rotten cabbages.
The Yilu brand milk powder was tested by quality inspectors in Fuyang, who confirmed that its protein content was far lower than the levels required by national standards
Kong Weizhao , a lawyer with the Juvenile Protection Committee under the All-China Lawyers' Association, said: 'I am sure justice will be served under the law for Xiaoanqiang and all babies who are victims of substandard milk powder.'
