Fate of pet monkey still unclear

The Kowloon City monkey's fate remains undecided following a meeting between the late owner's son and conservation officials.

It was the first time that Chan Yiu-wing, the son of 'Monkey Man' Chan Yat-biu, had met officials over the future of the monkey, since his father died this month.

During the meeting, officials sought to determine Mr Chan's sincerity as they asked him how he cared for Kam Ying, a rhesus macaque, after his father was too ill to look after it. 'I told them I am very sincere as I was mainly responsible for taking care of Kam Ying for the last two years,' he said.

Mr Chan said officials told him about the conditions in the licence issued to his father four years ago, and asked if he could fulfil them.

Despite the meeting, no decision over Kam Ying was made.

Officials reiterated they would be open-minded about the issue and that they would decide soon.

Officials urged Mr Chan to consider carefully if he really wants to keep the eight-year-old female monkey. 'He has to show that he can fulfil the conditions set in the licence,' one official said.
