Mainland tournament a valuable experience for Yu

Yu Kwok-see should have gained valuable experience after participating in the Taiyuan Junior Open in Shanxi province, says her coach Wong Ching.

The 17-year-old came fourth in the team event in which she was partnered by Russian Polina Mikhailova and Zelina Shaban of Jordan.

Yu reached the last 16 in the junior girls' singles but failed to get to the quarter-finals of the mainland competition after losing 4-0 to Chinese-Taipei's Lee I-chen.

Wong said Yu would have to improve if she is to become competitive at international level.

'Kwok-see actually did quite well throughout the tournament and gave her normal performance,'

she said.

'Yet, like many young players, she lacks the experience to be consistent. She had ups and downs during a match.

'And she was easily affected emotionally - like when she was leading, she got nervous.

'These are common mistakes committed by young, inexperienced players.

'Nevertheless, I'm sure she will overcome them as she plays more international tournaments.'
