The Chinese yuan, also known as the renminbi, is already convertible under the current account - the broadest measure of trade in goods and services. However, the capital account, which covers portfolio investment and borrowing, is still closely managed by Beijing because of worries about abrupt capital flows.

December 2003


Wang Chun, secretary-general of Jilin province, gets 18 years in prison for accepting 1.7 million yuan in bribes


Mai Chongkai, president of the Guangdong Higher People's Court, gets 15 years in prison for accepting 1.06 million yuan in bribes


Wang Xuebing , president of China Construction Bank, is jailed for 12 years for accepting an unspecified amount of bribes


February 2004


Wang Huaizhong, vice-governor of Anhui province , is executed for accepting 5.17 million yuan in bribes


March 2004


Chai Wangqun, director of the Yunnan province Publicity Department, gets 12 years in prison for accepting 1.1 million yuan in bribes


May 2004


Lu Wanli, director of the Guizhou province Communications Department, gets the death sentence for accepting more than 25 million yuan in bribes
