Learn to express yourself through art

The YMCA is offering a range of courses to ensure that you have an artistic summer. The YMCArts in Education Project classes have been offered throughout the year for the past two years and have proved popular.

The summer courses will run from June 17 to October 17, with most activities taking place over the weekends. The classes, which will be taught in Cantonese, are aimed at those aged between 14 and 25.

The offerings range from basic guitar lessons to a fashion body art movement course and puppet theatre classes. No experience is required for the guitar classes, where they'll also teach you how to sing while playing. You will also learn to create your own music.

There is also a media programme, where you will learn how to take pictures and videos to express yourself and create a story with the images without using words.

If making music and videos interests you, then you'll probably love RE-play MTV where participants will learn how to produce a music video using footage that they have filmed. Participants are recommended to bring their own digital video camera.

One of the more popular classes is the fashion body art movement. This course, which is only available during the summer, teaches students that fashion is found not only in clothes, but also in the use of body language and movement.

It closely resembles a dance course where students express themselves through movement rather than fashion design.

Mainstream dance classes are also available, with the most popular being the jazz and hip-hop programmes.

A special form of art is taught in the puppet theatre workshop. Instead of taking centre stage, you'll perform behind it, expressing yourself through the use of puppets.

YMCA is planning a stage performance in November, in which students from its summer classes may be invited to participate.

For those who can't wait that long to watch the artistic endeavours of others, there will be a YMCA Live Band Show called Everywhere is Music VII - Girl Power on August 20. Tickets are $40 for students and $60 for adults.

Each course is limited to 20 people. There are discounts for members. For information, call 2268 7718 or visit www.ymcahk.org.hk
